Song of the Week #6

Better late than never, I suppose:

Album: N/A. You can find it on Theoretical Record, a compilation
Year: Some time between 1977-1981
Genre: No Wave

I'm not going to call myself an expert on the no wave scene by any stretch of the imagination, but it was definitely a revolutionary movement, and Theoretical Girls were a very creative group. Some people might know them as the first home for Glenn Branca, who later developed a big name for himself as an avant-garde composer. This song puts the band's talent to use, creating a tapestry that mocks the advent of computer dating in a gloriously before its time piece. It 's repetitive and tense, raw and energetic, quirky and creative all in one song.

Song of the Week #5

Hunx and his Punx - You Don't Like Rock 'n' Roll
Album: Gay Singles
Year: 2009
Genre: Punk, Pop

Hunx and his Punx are fun as hell and this song is, in my mind, the epitome of that. You Don't Like Rock 'n' Roll is a catchy, upbeat anthem for rock fans to get behind. The song has enough of an edge to it to make it great to chant along with. I can play this song at any time and it will bring a smile to my face.

Prog and Jazz

First off, unfortunately there was no Radio Schizo today due to technical difficulties. But on the upside, I've got a kind of new show coming up for the summer semester! If you've payed attention to the radio on 2-6PM tuesday, I've got a prog/jazz show that extends a full four hours!

Tuesdays, 2-6PM
Profoundly Layered Passion:
Format: Progressive Rock/Jazz
This show is four hours switching up between record sides of classic progressive rock and jazz music of all varieties. From the tame and masterful to the adventurous avant-garde and experimental. From Yes and Univers Zero to Dizzy Gillespie and Ornette Coleman.

Song of the Week #4

Album: Counting Heartbeats
Year: 2007
Genre: Sludge Metal

As odd as it sounds, this was the first sludge metal band I ever listened to. Not Mastodon, not Acid Bath, but Kongh. This album does hold a fair bit of nostalgia for me, but this is not one of those albums that faded out as part of some short-lived phase. Counting Heartbeats embodies everything that I love about sludge metal. Pushed beyond is relentlessly slow-paced, but it is by no means static. It's dark and brooding and heavy as all hell. I can't help but find a beauty in it, though. It embraces the magnificence of darkness and alienation. Truly a fantastic song.

Summer Schedule

Mondays, 10-11PM
Radio Schizo:
Format: Punk
First off among my new shows is punk. Radio Schizo is just an hour-long platform for punk bands of all creeds, colors and sub-genres. Expect to hear bands such as Amebix, Rudimentary Peni, The Nation of Ulysses, The Queers and The Wipers.

Wednesdays, 4-6PM
Sounds of the Animal Kingdom:
Format: Metal
Sounds of the Animal Kingdom isn't so far off from Metal Up Your Ass. I do not feel right taking that name up for the show, though, without my co-host's presence. Sounds of the Animal Kingdom has more of a focus on extreme and doom metal. You're likely to hear High on Fire, Brutal Truth, Carcass, Rwake and YOB.

I'll also be taking up a 2-6PM timeslot on tuesday, which may evolve into a prog/jazz show, so stay tuned for information on that.

Song of the Week #3

Sun Ra - Images
Album: Space is the Place
Year: 1973
Genre: Avant-garde Jazz

This is an odd piece for Sun Ra. By that I mean it's fairly normal compared to most of his avant-garde work. Images has such a good balance between big band and avant-garde sounds, though. The rich and full composition is underlined by the points in which it deviates from its own formula. This song is a prime example of Sun Ra's ability to control chaos. With this song, he tips his hand and shows us just how much power he commands over his music. The result is both beautiful and eerie.

Monday, May 23, 2011

Song of the Week #2

The Mountain Goats - Satanic Messiah
Album: Satanic Messiah EP
Year: 2008
Genre: Indie

The Mountain Goats are one of my favorite bands of all time and this song helps to demonstrate why. First off, let it be known that I consider John Darnielle the lyrical genius of this generation. Satanic Messiah is the title cut off of one of the Mountain Goat's lesser known EPs and it is the most beautiful song you will hear about the return of the antichrist. The character of this song wants to see fire rain down upon the earth, but there is a sense of hesitation. The melancholy of the music and the hesitance in John's voice, though, lead us to hear a bit of regret. The kind of regret you feel when you first realize just how hot fire really is. What makes this song so great, though, is its ability to make you feel that regret. That is what makes Satanic Messiah such a powerful song.

Song of the Week #1

In an attempt to liven things up around here, I'm installing a lame song of the week feature! I'm not just going to post a song and leave, though, as many others do. You get to choose to ignore my ramblings about the selected songs as well! But enough introduction, let's cut the ribbon already with...

Album: Lyburnum
Year: 1994
Genre: Punk, Emo

This song is long, static and beautiful. In its lack of movement it is captivating and works well to convey pure apathy, nihilism and feelings of futility in the face of an increasingly hedonistic and self-cannibalizing world. It's cynical and honest, full of sincere emotion and for that it shines magnificently.

Summertime

As the summer sun seeks to consume the land in a conflagration of of lethargy and leisure, one may make a minor misjudgment in believing that I, too, am just as oppressed. What exactly am I saying? I don't know, but I am going to be around doing radio during the off season! I may try to get a scheduled show or two, so stay tuned for more information.

If I have nothing to setlist, I will try to keep things interesting by reporting on my random musical observations, though do not take this as a guarantee. Maybe I'll install a lame song of the week feature or something...

LotP Setlist - 05/02/11

This week in prog: is it prog? Why yes, at least three albums on this setlist should be immediately recognizable as progressive rock, but what of the Grateful Dead and Rainbow? Why yes, they are indeed progressive in some ways! Anthem of the Sun is a fantastically eclectic album with just as many twists and turns as any progressive effort. Rainbow fall more into the heavy metal genre, but the Uriah Heep influence in their music is palpable and they made prog influence in metal rather popular. Without further ado, here's the full list:
  1. The Alan Parson's Project - Tales of Mystery and Imagination: Edgar Alan Poe (Side 1)
  2. Traffic - The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys (Side 1)
  3. The Grateful Dead - Anthem of the Sun (Side 1)

Spring Schedule

Let's see which shows I'm currently a part of this semester:

Mondays, 2-4PM
Lair of the Proglodyte:
Format: Progressive Rock
This show is a platform for one of my great musical loves; progressive rock. I suppose that was obvious, since I decided to list the format beforehand, but let's just say the reiteration was for effect. Here, I play full sides of pure vinyl straight from the WRPI archives, leaving prog long and uncut, just as the creators intended it. Expect to hear anything from the classics like Yes and Genesis to the avant-garde stylings of Univers Zero and Magma.

Mondays, 10PM-12AM
(((O))):
Format: Drone/Experimental
(((O))) isn't just a show, it is a saga chronicling the hopefully fictional adventures of Dr. Moon or Gun, myself and our various occult acquaintances. It is an adventure that spans the heaviest, darkest and oddest of sounds in the universe, from Sunn O))) to the Boredoms and back again. I can only safely recommend this show to those with the most open of minds.

Wednesdays, 6-8PM
Nasal Retentive Calliope Music:
Format: Insanity
This show is the main outlet for my various chaotic tendencies. Anything goes on this show. Folk? Yes. Death metal? Most definitely. Hip-hop? Oh yeah! Anything can and will happen. NRCM alternates between simple grab bags of eclectic music and more specific themes. The only rule is that Frank Zappa always starts the show off. Well, that and the basic tenets of quality programming.

You can listen to any of these shows only on WRPI Troy, 91.5FM, The Upstate Underground!

A Brief Introduction

So here we are, amidst the blogosphere... Who are we? Well, we turns out to be me and me is I, Gaberaham Lincoln, DJ on WRPI Troy, destroyer of worlds. What am I doing with a blog? Well, I have decided to erect this cyber bulletin board as a center for my radio campaign. This blog is the place to be if you want setlists from any of my shows, relevant updates and maybe a few self-indulgent rambling passages. I would say that serves as an adequate introduction.
